Ports and Standards

Round back, the Samsung 172X supports both the 15-pin Analog and DVI video standards. Curiously, the monitor doesn't actually ship with the DVI cable bundled in, but it does include a rather thin analog video cable... I suppose the lack of a DVI cables means it is available as an option, but the manufacturer should really pony up the extra few dollars and include both.

Power is supplied to the unit via a DC connection - meaning a power brick with full 6' length power cable rests on the floor down below. If you decide to mount the 172X on an armature, or on the wall, the thin DC power cable is a lot easier to hide than a standard wall plug.

The entire display is well balanced on the stand, which does not feature any type of swivel, and nor does it need one. The entire unit weighs 3.7Kg, making it light enough to move on its own from side to side.

The stand has dual hinges, a fact that Samsung are actually marketing as a feature (go figure?). The benefit of two hinges in the "V" shaped stand is that in addition to tilting the LCD panel back or forward for the best viewing angle, the second hinge allows one to adjust the vertical height and inch or so. It also makes the unit fold up into a very compact package for wall mounting.

To do just that, the entire base folds up behind the LCD and sort of locks into place. The overall height of this wall mounting configuration is not more than about 2". The power and video signal cables are hidden behind the screen, though there is no cable management system per say. Incidently, the collapsible stand is not removable.
