The Intel
Core 2 Duo processor runs on a 266 MHz FSB by
default, that's pretty high to begin with. It will be interesting to see how far
the Epox 5P945 Pro is able to overclock, but first we need to
turn the memory frequency down to DDR2-400 MHz mode, this way the Corsair Twin2X2048-6400C4 memory will not hold the motherboard
back.
Traditionally we take overclocking slow and methodically, but
since it's an Epox motherboard I decided to increase the FSB to 300 MHz
right from the get go. The board had no problems with this. Increasing
the motherboard clock speed in 10 MHz increments, it quickly reached a speed of 350
MHz.
That's all she wrote.... because the motherboard
maxed out completely. I'm sure the Epox 5P945 Pro has more in it, Epox just
needs to increase the motherboard's top speed!
Epox always has a flexible
BIOS:
In the Advanced Chipset Features section we find the memory timing
adjustments. Epox just gives you the basics here, CAS Latency, RAS to CAS, and
RAS Precharge.
We find some decent options in the Power BIOS Features section,
you can adjust the FSB from 266-350 MHz in 1 MHz increments as well as the PCI
Express frequency between 100-122 MHz although that's better left alone. There
are memory multiplier options but the fastest you can go is only DDR2-667.
Epox allows you to adjust the CPU voltage up to 1.725V, the chipset to 1.8V and the memory to 2.18V.
Up next the test system specs and benchmarks.
