MP3 players are one of the most popular devices on the market these
days, and the YP-20T "Baby-Yepp" is sure to capture the attention of a few.
As far as portable MP3 players go, this has to be one of the smallest on the market,
measuring only a scant 40x70x22mm. The 32MB (64MB also available) unit will hold
from between 7-12 average sized MP3's at a good quality encoding. In our
tests with the device, we managed to store about 7 songs that ranged in size from
2Mb to 7Mb - sound quality during playback was really excellent.

The YP-20T ships with a pair of headphones that double as a lanyard, a CD-ROM
with Samsung's Yepp Explorer software, instructions, USB cable and a AAA
battery. The unit is powered by a single AAA battery and will get about 4 hours
of playback out of it. To transfer your MP3's onto the Baby Yepp it need only be
connected via the USB cable to a computer with the Yepp Explorer software
installed on it. The Explorer software shows information on the number of MP3's
on the unit, their size and information regarding how much storage
remains. Transfers to the onboard NAND flash memory take about 20-30
seconds for an average sized MP3 file.
As the unit only comes with built in flash memory there are no mechanisms for
upgrading it, or increasing storage size however.

K9F5608U0M are a 32Mx8bit NAND Flash Memory with a spare 1,024Kx8bit. Its
NAND cell provides memory for the solid state mass storage market. A
program operation programs the 528- byte page in typically 200ms and an
erase operation can be performed in typically 2ms on a 16K-byte block.
Data in the page can be read out at 50ns cycle time per byte. The I/O pins
serve as the ports for address and data input/output as well as command
inputs. The on-chip write controller automates all program and erase
functions including pulse repetition, where required, and internal verify
and margining of data. Even the write-intensive systems can take advantage
of the K9F5608U0M's extended reliability of 100K program/erase cycles by
providing ECC(Error Correcting Code) with real time mapping out algorithm.
The K9F5608U0M-YCB0/YIB0 is an optimum solution for large nonvolatile
storage applications such as solid state file storage and other portable
applications requiring nonvolatility.
Using the device is quite simple, though it will take a
while to figure out a few key combinations necessary to shut the unit down.
There are only four buttons on the device, which will easily fit in the small
pocket of a pair of jeans. The LCD display indicates the song title and several
other bits of info like the battery strength, and track number. Additionally you
can use the play/pause/stop key to begin a track or shuffle through using the
FF/Reverse keys which also double as the volume controls. Learning the
various options associated with the menu key is important for easily navigating
through the various menus that allow you to control volume or shut the device

The interface is a little less than intuitive, but
functions quite well once you've picked up the right key combinations. It ships
with a set of headphones that are integrated into a lanyard so the unit can be
hung around your neck while exercising for instance. A small detachable clip
holds the small player firmly in place. The sound quality through the headphones is quite good, but we preferred to
use a pair of standard ear-bud headphones without the extra accessories.
Uploading music via the USB cable is really easy and with the Explorer
software Samsung ship with the unit, adding or removing files is as easy as
clicking and dragging. The unit also as some erase features built into it. Play
back need not stop while the files are being transferred (so long as the process
doesn't affect the song you are listening to).
All in all, the Yepp YP-20T is a really cool little MP3 player. Our only wish
would be a for an easier way to shut off the power, but that is a minor point.
I would however recommend getting the 64MB version as it offers more storage
Granted this type of MP3 player is not meant for everyone (memory is not
expandable). If you are the sort who has CD's full of MP3's to listen to you,
would be better served by getting one of the new generation MP3-CD players.
However for the person who only needs a small amount of MP3 storage during the
morning jog, this incredibly small, and ergonomic device would be a good bet.
