Kingmax DDR in single channel

Because we were set to test the Kingmax DDR in single channel mode, we evaluated the memory on the most appropriate platform; an nForce2 motherboard. Obviously, it was set to run in single channel mode.

Things started off slow as we adjusted the timings to get the best mix of speed and latency. The Kingmax memory couldn't quite hold aggressive timings of 2-2-2-5 no matter what voltage we fed the DIMM, and in the end, the tightest they would do 2-3-3-6.

As far as overclocking the DIMM went, starting at 200 MHz FSB I began to raise the clock speed slowly, but at 207 MHz FSB ran into a few problems. Raising the memories voltage to 2.8V stabilized things nicely. That seem to help quite a bit as the DIMMs would now run all the way up to 216 MHz FSB before hitting the wall. Not the greatest overclock, but with the 512Mb Kingmax PC3500 retailing for $155 CDN ($115 US), a pretty good mix of value and performance.
