AMD Athlon64 3500+ Overclocking Adventure
AMD Athlon64 3500+ Overclocking Adventure - PCSTATS
I've been asked countless times why I bother to overclock such fast systems and the reason is that I can.

Benchmarks: SiSoft Sandra 2005, Super Pi, piFast

SiSoft Sandra 2004 Source: Sandra

Sandra is designed to test the theoretical power of a complete system and individual components. The numbers taken though are again, purely theoretical and may not represent real world performance.

The numbers from the Athlon64 3500+ at stock and when overclocked are very impressive. The memory numbers drop from the aircooled to the prometeia cooled settings, since the memory and HyperTransport are both set lower in the latter. At 3.05Ghz, the Athlon64 3500+ scores almost 50% higher than stock in the multimedia benchmarks!

Super Pi Source: SuperPI

SuperPI calculates the number PI to 1 Million digits in this raw number crunching benchmark. The benchmark is fairly diverse and allows the user to change the number of digits of PI that can be calculated from 16 Thousand to 32 Million. The benchmark, which uses 19 iterations in the test, is set at 1 Million digits then repeated at 8 million digits.

Lower numbers denote faster calculation times (seconds), and hence, better performance.

SuperPi
1 Million Digits: Seconds Ranking
Athlon64 3500+ 2.2 GHz (200/400) stock 38
Athlon64 3500+ 2.66 GHz (242/484) aircooled 32
Athlon64 3500+ 3.05 GHz (277/498) Prometia 28
8 Million Digits: Seconds Ranking
Athlon64 3500+ 2.2 GHz (200/400) stock 418
Athlon64 3500+ 2.66 GHz (242/484) aircooled 349
Athlon64 3500+ 3.05 GHz (277/498) Prometia 312

In this benchmark lower is better, and when the Athlon64 3500+ is clocked at 3.05 GHz it's able to crack the 30 second barrier. Very impressive!

Hexus piFast Source: Hexus

Pifast is a small program that computes Pi to a set amount of decimal places and also displays how long it takes. This then gives us a basis for charting the results, giving a performance indicator for new and old technology at a glance.

Lower results are better.

Hexus piFast
Processors: Seconds Ranking
Athlon64 3500+ 2.2 GHz (200/400) stock 54.09
Athlon64 3500+ 2.66 GHz (242/484) aircooled 45.09
Athlon64 3500+ 3.05 GHz (277/498) Prometia 40.38

Hexus piFast also shows how overclocking increases the raw power of the CPU.
