In order to test the effectiveness
of each of the software, we compiled a list of ten really explicit pornographic
sites and a list of ten regular sites. Then, we simply attempted to visit each
site with the each of the software running in the background at the highest
filtering settings. You may be wondering why we bothered visiting "appropriate"
sites not just pornographic sites. The reason for that is that we noticed that
when we set some of the software at the highest possible filtering settings we were not able to visit even appropriate sites.
That's definitely not a good thing, since we only want to block inappropriate material not the rest of the Internet. In order to give each software a fair chance, we downloaded the most current block lists where it was applicable. Our test machine was connected to the Internet via a 56K dial-up account.
