VIA Cluster Server Platform for Ultra High Density
VIA Technologies, Inc, a leading innovator and developer of silicon chip
technologies and PC platform solutions, today launched the VIA Cluster Server
Platform, an ultra energy efficient high density server reference design powered
by the dual VIA Eden-N processor-based VIA VT310-DP Mini-ITX mainboards, at
China’s leading technology show, eMEX this week.
The VIA Cluster Server Platform reference design comprises low profile 1U
units each with two VIA VT310-DP Mini-ITX mainboards, enabling each 1U unit to
operate as two individual server nodes. Leveraging the superb power-performance
ratio and thermal properties of the fanless 1GHz VIA Eden-N processors, the VIA
Cluster Server Platform draws up to a very low 1 kilowatt from a standard AC
power outlet, making it the performance per watt leader of its class and
extending high density computing into much wider applications than traditional
cluster server solutions.
“The ever-increasing demand for processing power in education, business and
other organizations that are increasingly cost, space and power conscious has
generated a need for more innovative high density server solutions,” commented
Eric Chang, Special Assistant to the CEO, Strategic Marketing, VIA Technologies,
Inc. “Our energy efficient, cost effective Cluster Server Platform packs a
powerful processing punch into a really small space, putting massively parallel
computing into the hands of whole new markets.”
The VIA VT310-DP Mini-ITX in a 1U unit of the cluster reference design
permits two 3.5” IDE/SATA hard drives to be installed with the mainboards,
enabling high density local storage for applications such as data mining.
Combined with relevant middleware, the reference design empowers all cluster
configurations, including high performance, high availability and load balancing
The VIA PadLock Security Engine integrated into each VIA Eden-N processor
features a quantum based random number generator and military-grade AES
encryption, providing developers with the tools to secure data stored and
transmitted in real-time with little penalty to processor utilization.
Through the ultra low power consumption of VIA VT310-DP Mini-ITX mainboards,
the VIA Cluster Server Platform enables high density server solutions that
require no power or cooling infrastructure changes, and also makes redundant the
need for system and processor fans for near-silent operation, bringing the
benefits of a cluster server solution without the traditional high
implementation, operation and maintenance costs.
VIA will display its innovative cluster reference design from today at the
VIA booth A16, Hall 3A of the eMEX technology show, held in the Suzhou Jiang Su
Province of China. The reference cluster design is available to OEMs and system
integrators looking to develop affordable high density server solutions.

About the VIA VT310-DP Mini-ITX mainboard
To meet the growing demand for economic, efficient and secure server
solutions, VIA has introduced the VIA VT310-DP Mini-ITX mainboard. The first
dual processor mainboard produced by VIA, the VIA VT310-DP Mini-ITX is the
performance per watt leader of its class and through its comprehensive set of
on-board features enables economic and efficient implementation into a variety
of server scenarios.
The VIA VT310-DP Mini-ITX mainboard is powered by two of the worlds smallest
x86 processors, the VIA Eden-N, that have been designed for ultra low power
consumption and operating temperatures. Embedded into each VIA Eden-N processor
is the VIA PadLock Security Engine that empowers real-time encryption/decryption
of data using the military-grade AES algorithm at speeds of up to 22 Gbps. Also
included with the engine are dual quantum based random number generators to
provide an unshakable foundation for the encryption process. Integrated security
offered by the VIA PadLock Security Engine ensures speeds and efficiency many
times of what is possible with software only, and unlike software only
approaches, has negligible impact on processor performance.
Included with the VIA VT310-DP Mini-ITX mainboard is a comprehensive set of
tools that reduce the requirement for add-on cards to create a complete server
solution. Enabled by the VIA CN400 North Bridge and VIA 8237R South Bridge,
these tools include support for DDR400/33/266 memory, acceleration for MPEG-4/2
encoding and decoding, support for IDE, and dual SATA with inbuilt RAID 0/1/0+1
data redundancy. Also included is USB support, dual 10/100 Ethernet connections
and a single Gigabit Ethernet connection.
