LCD's don't suffer from the same parameters that can cause that kind of eyestrain, they draw a substantially lower amount of power, and they take up just a few inches of desk space.

Final Evaluation Notes & Conclusions
|
Little features like this Kensington lock on the rear of the display make it well suited to many open office environments where securing down the display is an important issue to contend with. |
The colour saturation on the Viewsonic is something
we noticed while reviewing it. Colours appeared a little richer, but faced
with a sluggish pixel response of 35ms (25ms is the average) the monitor
is not as optimally suited for fast-paced games as other displays might be.
Visually, we ran UT2003 through a few paces and colour was very nice. Ghosting
wasn't really visible to me, but when testing fast moving text we could see
some blurring effects.
The fast moving text test basically involves a
few HTML pages of black text on a white background. If you can move the page of
text up and down quickly without any visible blurring then things are very good.
On the Viewsonic VG700, we saw some blurring of the text which pegged the
display about average for a value oriented LCD.
Boasting a nice 17" screen size and a resolution of 1280x1024 pixels, the viewsonic boasts
a pretty sweet picture for most applications. Fast moving images may leave
you wanting for a little faster pixel response, but in our tests this didn't
seem too bad. A 15-pin analog connection will work with any video card out there,
and with a 450:1 contrast ratio, brightness of 260 nits and viewing angles of
140/135 degrees horizontal/vertical the display does justice to itself.
The
price of the 17"
Viewsonic VG700 is $700USD which is pretty competitive for an LCD of
this size. The VG700 would be a good choice for SOHO, or for office work where fast moving
images are not the predominant duty of the display (though most people won't see anything
they would consider a problem).
The colour saturation of the display is nice, but we really
would have liked to have seen adoption of DVI for those who have recently upgraded to a newer video card.
The inclusion of
DVI can really help with the picture quality of this digital device. For the most part though, we were satisfied with the
picture this value-oriented Viewsonic monitor produced. For folks on a budget the VG700 might be just what the doctor ordered!
