FujiFilm FinePix F402 Digital Camera Review
FujiFilm FinePix F402 Digital Camera Review - PCSTATS
Fujifilm must have been looking towards style conscious consumers when they designed the F402 because it is endowed with more sex appeal than a digital camera really ought to have.

Power Requirements and Longevity

The FinePix F402 draws power from a NP-40 Lithium Ion Battery pack (3.7V 710mAh) that is literally about the size of a compact flash module.

Measuring 8mm x 40mm x 35mm (HxLxW) in size, the battery pack is recharged inside the camera with the aid of an external AC adaptor. The AC adaptor plugs into the side of the FinePix F402, or the docking station, so you can recharge the camera fairly easily on the road or at home. Charge time is about 2 hours.

According to Fujifilm, the camera is capable of around 140 shots on a freshly charged battery with the LCD display on, and 400 shots with it off. The LCD doesn't draw that much current, but the back light is a big hog, so if you're like me and perfer to frame shots with the LCD there is a little trick you can use to make the camera last a little longer. Turn down the brightness on the LCD back light as much as possible (it should still be visible, and useable) for your environment, and that should help save some electricity.

The LCD Viewfinder

There are probably about a dozen menu screens for the F402 so we're not going to show them all here. Since the quality of the 1.5" LCD viewfinder is really nice I think it is worth more than a passing mention.

Compared to other cameras we have used from Fujifilm in the past it is clear that they are continuing to upgrade their cameras with better LCD displays as time passes. We've laid out a few screen shots of the menu screens you'll encounter most when taking pictures. Notice how there is no visible pixelization of the screen.

Resolutions available include; 4M fine, 4M normal, 2M, 1M and 0.3M. Since the camera is 2.1MegaPixel, the 2M setting is default
With the timer enable, the user will have 10 seconds from when the shutter release is clicked to when the camera will take a picture. A small LED on the front of the FinePix F402 blinks to indicate the timer status.

The camera can be set to take continuous photos.. but only for two shots. Other models we have seen will take up to five shots in a go.

The Option menu allows the user to change things like the LCD brightness, and set the camera from manual to auto.

Frames can be displayed on the LCD by switching over to the playback setting. Images can then be view and deleted or cropped as necessary to save file space on the go.

Shots per Flash Storage

Quality: 4M - Fine 4M - Norm 2M 1M 0.3M
Resolution: 2304x1728 2304x1728 1600x1200 1280x960 640x480
16MB xD 9 20 39 49 122
32MB xD 20 41 79 99 247
64MB xD 40 84 159 198 497
128MB xD 81 169 319 398 997

These figures can vary depending on the complexity of the image, but in general they are fairly accurate. Since the FinePix F402 comes with a 16MB xD flash card we have at most 39 shots on the ideal resolution, and 49 if we decide to drop it down one notch.
