By combining DirectX8 support with completely new
graphics, it continues to provide good overall system benchmarks. 3DMark2001 SE
has been created in cooperation with the major 3D accelerator and processor
manufacturers to provide a reliable set of diagnostic tools. The suite
demonstrates 3D gaming performance by using real-world gaming technology to test
a system's true performance abilities. Tests include: DirectX8 Vertex Shaders,
Pixel Shaders and Point Sprites, DOT3 and Environment Mapped Bump Mapping,
support for Full Scene Anti-aliasing and Texture Compression and two game tests
using Ipion real-time physics. Higher 3DMark scores denote better performance.

I'm not
very sure why the AthlonXP
3000+/KT400 combo scores so poorly. Here we see that the AthlonXP 3000+, nForce2, Radeon
9700 Pro combo totally blows away the P4 2.8 GHz even when it's teamed up
with a Granite Bay based motherboard!
This new
accurate diagnostic tool, designed for DirectX9.0, provides you
with all the information you need to make informed hardware assessments. Havok
Total real-time physics library from Havok - these routines
are used to accurately model the movements of objects due to forces,
etc. FMOD sound library from Firelight Technologies - these are used
for the various sound effects and routines used in the tests. Graphics adapter
analysis software from Powerstrip of Entech Taiwan - this is used
to correctly determine the speeds of the graphics processing and video
memory chips, plus supply additional hardware information. Higher 3DMark03 scores denote
better performance.

Unfortunately we did not have the P4 2.8 GHz system
available to benchmark 3DMark03. I remember when 3DMark2001 first came out, all
the systems slowed down to a crawl too. Here we're pretty much all
videocard limited despite the fact we're using a
Radeon 9700 Pro! In any case, here are some of the world's first AMD AthlonXP
3000+ 3DMark03
Benchmarks - 4809 3DM03's is pretty good. :-)
