3DMark2001SE is the latest installment in the 3DMark series by MadOnion. By combining DirectX8 support with completely new graphics, it continues to provide good overall system benchmarks. 3DMark2001SE has been created in cooperation with the major 3D accelerator and processor manufacturers to provide a reliable set of diagnostic tools. The suite demonstrates 3D gaming performance by using real-world gaming technology to test a system's true performance abilities. Tests include: DirectX8 Vertex Shaders, Pixel Shaders and Point Sprites, DOT3 and Environment Mapped Bump Mapping, support for Full Scene Anti-aliasing and Texture Compression and two game tests using Ipion real-time physics.

Higher numbers denote better performance.

Not that you'd run AA+AF with this type of card, but here are the numbers anyway.

Quake III Arena is a First Person Shooter (FPS) that revolutionized gaming as we know it. Using multiple light sources and having graphics textures that can fill videocards, even after 3 years it's still able to bring a cutting edge system to its knees.

The image was nice and pretty but the frame rate is just too low in QIII here.

While the MSI G4MX440-T8X is not targeted towards the hardcore gamer, it's still nice to see the videocard can handle most games at 1024x768 pretty well. With a retail price of $110 ($70 US) one really should not expect much from the videocard, after all it is "just" budget videocard.

Of course, for that price there aren't too many extra's other then TV-Output. It's nice to see MSI still does all the little things right like thermal paste between the core and GPU even though this is an inexpensive card. For those who want a "quiet" PC, this card uses a passive heatsink which produces absolutely no noise. If the heatsink is a little too warm for you, an advanced passive cooler like the Zalman ZM50-HP could be used to improve things thermally. The heatsink is attached with normal though-PCB mounting points and not glued to the GPU as with some other cards.

MSI cards have always been good to us in terms of overclocking, and the G4MX440-T8X did not disappoint. We were able to hit an amazing 332 MHz core, 540 MHz memory (250/400 stock speed) and I'm positive we could have gone higher if we were not limited by the software.

The MSI G4MX440-T8X is good for those looking for a solid 2D videocard with occasional gaming, or for someone building a system who's on a tight budget, or needs a half height card. If you're a moderate or hardcore gamer you'll want something else, but then you already knew that. The MSI GF4MX440-T8X is a good way to bring in a little speed for small form factor or book sized computers, challenging the on board video chipsets which often suck CPU resources and often perform pretty poorly.
