Benchmarks: ScienceMark2, QIII Arena

ScienceMark 2.0 Source: ScienceMark

Mol Dyn: Molecular Dynamics is a method for simulating the thermodynamic behaviour of materials using their forces, velocities, and positions. Most important of the afore mentioned is the force. Primordia: This code calculates the Quantum Mechanical Hartree-Fock Orbitals for each electron in any element of the periodic table.

Lower numbers denote faster calculation times (seconds), and hence better performance.

ScienceMark 2.0 - Molecular Dynamics
Processor Seconds Ranking
Athlon64 3200+ 89.8
Athlon64 3400+ 80.4
Athlon64 FX-51 78.7
Pentium4 3.2GHz Extreme Edition 90.7
Pentium4 3.2GHz Northwood 91.7
Pentium4 3.2GHz Prescott 103.5

The Mol Dyn (Molecular Dynamics) benchmark simulates thermodynamic behavior of materials using forces, velocities, and positions. The simulation is measured in seconds, so a lower score is better. Once again, the Athlon 64 processors fall into first, second, and third place, followed by Intel's 3.2GHz Pentium 4 Extreme Edition, and lastly Northwood and Prescott cores.

ScienceMark 2.0 - Primordia
Processor Seconds Ranking
Athlon64 3200+ 422.2
Athlon64 3400+ 389.9
Athlon64 FX-51 369
Pentium4 3.2GHz Extreme Edition 412.8
Pentium4 3.2GHz Northwood 423.7
Pentium4 3.2GHz Prescott 480.2

Primordia calculates the quantum mechanical Hartree-Fock orbitals for the electrons of any element in the periodic table. In the case of our benchmark, it's silver. Prescott turns in disappointing results once again, coming in last place. He 3.2GHz Northwood part scores about 13 percent faster, and comes in a mere second behind AMD's Athlon 64 3200+. Intel's Pentium 4 Extreme Edition claims a third-place finish, and the Athlon 64 FX and 3400+ take first and second place, respectively.

Quake III: Arena v.1.32

Quake III Arena is a First Person Shooter (FPS) that revolutionized gaming as we know it. Using multiple light sources and having graphics textures that can fill videocards, even after 3 years it's still able to bring a cutting edge system to its knees.

QIII Arena - 800x600
Processor FPS Ranking
Athlon64 3200+ 400.6
Athlon64 3400+ 428.3
Athlon64 FX-51 447.1
Pentium4 3.2GHz Extreme Edition 449
Pentium4 3.2GHz Northwood 371.2
Pentium4 3.2GHz Prescott 364.4

QIII Arena - 1024x768
Processor FPS Ranking
Athlon64 3200+ 391.9
Athlon64 3400+ 408.2
Athlon64 FX-51 429.2
Pentium4 3.2GHz Extreme Edition 432.2
Pentium4 3.2GHz Northwood 367.7
Pentium4 3.2GHz Prescott 362.0

Though it's no longer cutting-edge technology, Quake III is still a dependable benchmark. Further, several other companies are using a modified version of the same 3D engine first written by John Carmack for Quake III. Intel's Pentium 4 is the historical favorite, and it should come as no surprise that the Extreme Edition claims a first place finish. All three Athlon 64 chips fall in immediately after, followed by the 3.2GHz Northwood core, and finally, Intel's new Prescott.
