Overclocking comparison and conclusions
Overclocking comparison
It's
great to see how individual memory modules stack up against one another under
stock configuration, but we're also going to show how they compare when
overclocked. The overclocking results are listed below for all the memory
modules that have recently crossed our test bench. The higher the speed, the
better.
The PDP Systems PDC1G3200+XBLK memory was an excellent
overclocker, not quite up with the DDR elite, but certainly the 'best of the
rest'. Note that only one other product managed to overclock higher on our
Athlon64 test rig using 2-2-2-5 timings.
Red memory goes faster?
Maybe PDP
Systems have hit on something with their cherry red heatspreaders! The
performance of the Patriot PDC1G3200+XBLK Dual-channel DDR memory was uniformly
bright. This PC3200 memory kit scored near the top of the charts in every
benchmark, impressing us with its consistency.
PDP
Systems have taken a little bit of a risk by listing the maximum
overclocked speed they think their memory can attain right on the label of each
module. Fortunately, our tester proved well up to the challenge, overclocking
extremely well on both Intel and AMD platforms. On our Athlon64 test bed, only
one other memory module managed to overclock higher while maintaining the most
aggressive 2-2-2-5 memory timings.
On the
Pentium 4 test system, we managed to reach and overclock of 528MHz, which
was slightly less than the 533MHz the sticker claims that the PDC1G3200+XBLK
memory can do. According to the PDP Systems website, this speed requires a
memory voltage of between 2.85V-2.95V, and we were running at 2.8V. We have no
doubt that this memory would have achieved its rated overclock speed with a
slight voltage boost. Nonetheless, our Intel system showed an impressive boost
in benchmark scores with the PDC1G3200+XBLK modules running at 528MHz and
3-4-4-8 timings.
At a
price of about USD$220 (CAN$269), the PDP Patriot PDC1G3200+XBLK dual-channel
DDR memory kit is very reasonably priced for low-latency memory. For the price
you get some excellent memory that overclocks well and performs at a high
level.
