The second most important feature of any monitor is
the refresh rate. This is where the E400 is really segregated from the rest of
Sony's monitor lines. The "G" (corporate) series and "F" (CAD / Graphics Professional) series
sport higher refresh rates. While a resolution / refresh rate of 1280*1024 @ 85hz is nothing
to sneeze at, I was really looking for a flicker free refresh rate
at 1600*1200. The Sony E400 has a refresh rate of 75hz at 1600*1200,
but the flicker and wavy lines at the far right and far
left of the screen causes dizziness/nausea in me.
I am still investigating to see if it's the monitor or the Annihilator Pro
causing the nastiness. I am not sure either way, but I do know that at lower
resolutions, 75hz is not such a dizzying experience. Having said that, it could
still be either device, or both devices not being adequate enough for the
desired 1600*1200 resolution. I will update this review later if Sony or
Creative comes up with a solution for me.
The damper wires, are a nuisance for people new to aperture grille based CRT's. They are
used to stabilize the aperture grille and are visible as one, two, or three
very fine horizontal black lines (when viewed on a white background) on any aperture grille
CRT. To be honest, I rarely use a white background for anything but Word 2000,
therefore the two damper wires are not a nuisance, but people accustomed to TFT
displays or shadow mask CRT's will see the black lines right away and go
ballistic (some even bring them back and demand a refund.).
At $769 CAD ($539 USD) the Sony E400 is both a positive and
negative. It's a huge positive if you like Sony brand monitors, and like the
FD Trinitron CRT. But you can get other close alternatives for quite a bit
less.
Therein lies the
problem with the Sony E400; I can go on and on about how nice this monitor is
(and it REALLY is.) But the competition still has Sony beat on pricing. For
example, the KDS AV-195TF (Sony FD Trinitron) with a superior refresh rate at
1600*1200 (85hz) is expected to retail at $700 CAD / $483 (or less.) Samsung's 900NF (.25mm - .27mm Mitsubishi Dynaflat AG) is going for $655 CAD ($452) and
the Viewsonic PF790 (.25mm - .27mm Mitsubishi Dynaflat AG) is going for $689 CAD
($475)...
