Overclocking Comparison and Conclusions

Overclocking comparison

It's great to see how individual memory modules stack up against one another under stock configuration, but we're also going to show how they compare when overclocked. The overclocking results are listed below for all the memory modules that have recently crossed our test bench. The higher the speed on the Intel platform, the better. The higher the speed on the AMD platform with lower the latencies, the better.

The TwinMOS Speed Premium PC3200 is not the best memory for overclocking headroom, but it gives a respectable showing for the money. More notable was the performance boost our Intel test bed received when it was overclocked with this memory. Scores were a fair bit higher than we had expected, which was interesting to see. Could be good news for Intel fans looking for a memory bargain...

Performance on a budget

These TwinMOS Speed Premium PC3200 DDR modules are not intended to function at aggressive memory timings, and they can't. Both our Athlon64 and Pentium 4 test systems refused to boot with the timings set to 2-2-2-5. Ultra-low latency is not the target of this TwinMOS product, and at its standard speeds of 2.5-3-3-8 they provide good performance to both Intel and AMD systems.

In all of our benchmarks, the Twinmos Speed Premium PC3200 memory was in lockstep with the other tested memory modules at stock speeds. Overclocked performance was notable with our Pentium 4 system, which received a larger boost than the mediocre overclocked speed of the memory (490MHz) would suggest. This could be due to the fact that we were using the memory's default 2.5-3-3-8 timings as opposed to the looser 3-4-4-8 timing that many of the highest Intel overclocking memory modules need to use.

At a price of about USD$160 (CAN$195), the TwinMOS Speed Premium PC3200 memory modules represent excellent value! If you are in the market for a pair of dual-channel PC3200 DDR memory modules and you are not worried about flashy lights and heatspreaders, you would do well to consider this kit from Twinmos.
