Foxconn, primarily an OEM
supplier for the majority of its existence, has recently jumped into the retail
market with a whole bunch of entry-level products. Do not let that fool you
though, because since AMD integrated the memory controller into their
processors, performance between platforms is virtually identical meaning
entry-level boards should perform as fast as high end models!
With a retail price of $150 CDN ($125 US), the Foxconn WinFast
NF4SK8AA-8KRS is one of the most affordable nVidia nForce4 SLI-based
motherboards on the market, and it still packs quite a punch. The motherboard
does not come with a lot of features, just Gigabit LAN and 7.1 channel audio,
but it does come with decent expansion options and a good board layout.
The lack of USB brackets is disappointing however. The
NF4 SLI chipset supports ten USB ports by default, but only four are available
here. With the high number of external peripherals on the market, four USB ports
is definitely not enough. The NF4SK8AA-8KRS was not good at overclocking, but
with such a low price that can be forgiven of this mainstream board.
The Foxconn WinFast NF4SK8AA-8KRS performed
very well in the benchmark suite and is definitely worth the money. In fact the
motherboard easily kept up with the high end DFI LANParty NF4 SLI-DR and MSI K8N
Neo4 Platinum/SLI boards in almost every test, and both boards are substantially
more expensive! In fact the Foxconn motherboard is priced aggressively against
many of the NF4 Ultra motherboards we've tested
recently.
If you've been itching to upgrade your current system to Athlon64 and SLI but
don't want to mortgage the house, the Foxconn WinFast NF4SK8AA-8KRS is a great
alternative, just be sure to pick up an extra USB hub at the same time...
