Just because someone is on a budget
doesn't mean they have to sacrifice all that DirectX 9 goodness. Sure games will
not play very fast at high resolutions, but at lower resolutions gamers can
still experience the same eye candy.
Videocards like the Albatron GeForce 6600-512 offer
consumers a great and inexpensive option for when you just need a videocard, and
gaming is a occasional consideration. With a retail price of $173 CDN ($150 USD/£86GBP), the Albatron
GeForce 6600-512 is pretty price competitive, and as we saw in Quake 4 the extra
memory does help out in certain situations.
The 512MB Geforce 6600-based videocard comes with a
video break out box that allows users to connect their computer to the
television. The card even supports component output for high definition
TV's.
In terms of performance the Albatron GeForce 6600-512
did pretty well considering its intended audience. With all the eye candy
enabled, it could play most games at 1024x768 which is pretty respectable, and
the little card even overclocks pretty well too. With a stock speed of 300 MHz
core / 500 MHz memory, this little Albatron videocard was overclockable to 490
MHz core / 550 MHz memory! The results after overclocking showed some decent
performance boosts across the board.
Not everyone needs a GeForce 7800GTX (or afford it, and
those of you looking for something a bit lighter on the wallet yet still able to
play games will definitely be happy with what the Albatron GeForce 6600-512 has to offer. It's not the
fastest videocard on the market as you've seen, but it can handle the latest DX9
games at modest resolutions and that is good enough for most people.
