Inside a 19-inch Rackmount Case

The inside of the iStar D-Storm D300 3U case is nice and clean, just like the outside. All edges are bevelled where hands might come into contact, so hopefully you won't suffer any 'case cuts' while installing a system into this chassis.

The front area of the case is entirely taken up by the two drive cages which are removable. Up to four 5-1/4" drives, and four 3-1/2" hard drives can be squeezed into the front half of the D-Storm D300. Since the D300 is 20.8" long, there is enough room for a full sized ATX motherboard, though it will be fairly close to the back edge of any installed CD-ROM drives. From the back of the case to the tips of the 5-1/4" drive cage there is 11.5" worth of space, while the motherboard tray itself is 9-3/4" deep from rear to front. The motherboard tray is not removable from the chassis.

A 1-1/2 inch aluminum bracket is screwed into either side of the 19" wide case to provide additional support and rigidity. It can also be used to hold down full-length PCI cards and prevent them from wiggling loose.

Brass standoffs screw into pre-drilled holes to accommodate a variety of motherboard styles, including desktop and dual-processor boards. Motherboards up to 12" tall can be accommodated, and there is a further 3/4" space between the motherboard tray and power supply which is good if there are processors mounted near to the edge of the board.

On the opposite side of the standard ATX 2.0 power supply there is a 1/2" space to allow warm air to exit via a side cooling vent, or perhaps for tucking away extra long cables.
