Motherboard Highlights
The bottom right hand corner of the Asus P5B-E
motherboard is very busy From the
COM1 port to the three USB headers at the bottom of the motherboard.
ON the right there's the floppy drive connector, a bit lower we find the
six Serial ATA II ports and a Parallel IDE connector. The power LED indicator
tells you if the motherboard is receiving power. The Intel ICH8R southbridge is
under that small passive aluminum heatsink.
|
There is plenty of
space around the CPU socket so you can install larger heatsinks or
water blocks without much difficulty. The Intel P965 Express Northbridge
can get quite warm during operation so you'll want to have good system
airflow to keep things cool.
|
The four DDR2 memory
slots can be stuffed with up to 8GB of DDR2-800 memory. Asus colour
coordinates the DIMM slots to indicate which must be occupied to enable
dual channel memory support. If you're upgrading an older computer and
have a 20 pin ATX power supply, you'll also want to get a new ATX 2.0 spec
PSU. Newer models handle the power requirements of modern systems
better.
|
The Asus P5B-E
motherboard might have quite a bit of peripherals integrated but it also
comes with many expansion options. The three PCI Express x1 slots allow
you to install high bandwidth devices without having to worry about
bottlenecks.
