The face of the DataTec
DS350 is plane and simple, but the bright blue LED at center is kind of annoying after a while.
During our tests we chose to leave this unconnected.
At the rear of the DataTec
DS350 are the power jack, eSATA socket and power switch. There is
no cooling fan as you can obviously see, and in our tests with the unit the
aluminum case did get a little warm. We're not going to benchmark a SATA
hard drive in the DataTec DS350 because serial ATA devices like this do not have
any significant impact on data transfer speeds.
Final Thoughts on the DataTec
DS350
Anyone who has ever had to move a large
amount of data around a few different computer systems can definitely appreciate
the usefulness of removable hard drive racks. If your computer can't handle
another hard drive, or upgrading an existing drive is too much of a bother, an
external hard drive is a great solution to the problem.
The DataTec DS350 is a dead simple eSATA enclosure that offers
a basic way to connect an extra SATA drive
to your computer in a matter of minutes. You install the hard drive of your choice, and that's about it.
Connecting the external hard drive up to a desktop computer is as easy
as plugging in the DataTec DS350's power cord and connecting the
eSATA cable.
As with any external hard drive, theft becomes an issue. There is no
accommodating Kensignton locks, or really any other means of keeping the
entire enclosure from walking off. If you use a computer in a high traffic
area where this could be a concern, this type of storage solution is not
for you.
With a retail price of $40 USD ($50CDN / £20GBP), the DataTec DS350 is a
simple device which allows anyone to add a substantial amount of external
storage to their desktop PC with ease. Data transfer speeds on
the eSATA cable are just as fast as internal SATA drives, and
that's about all that really needs to be said.
