A modern hard drive like Western Digital's RaptorX can
withstand 65Gs during operation and 250Gs when put in storage conditions.
Notebook drives like Hitachi's TravelStar 7K200DS are a bit better at 350G
during operation and 1000Gs when it's powered off, but even that can't compare
to Super Talent's FSD28GC25M 128GB Solid State Drive. It can handle a massive 1500Gs and that's during operation!
Durability is just one thing that makes the Super Talent 128GB Solid State drive attractive and although its priced at around $4000US, it still has a ton of appeal for industrial or even military applications. The Super Talent 128GB SSD is compatible with the 2.5" Serial ATA form factor which means it's a drop in replacement for systems that can run off notebook hard drives.
Shock values are just one thing that make the Super Talent 128GB SSD attractive, it can also work in larger temperature ranges than conventional drives. Thanks to the drive using flash memory, it has near instantaneous access time, Super Talent quotes 0.1ms and our tests indicate a maximum of 1ms access time (1ms being the lowest value the program supports).
While the Super Talent 128GB SSD loses out to the Western Digital RaptorX in terms of bandwidth, let's remember that the RaptorX is one of the fastest commercial/enterprise class hard drives on the market. The values from the Super Talent 128GB SSD are comparable to desktop speeds and overall not bad at all.
Keeping in mind that the SuperTalent FSD28GC25M is
better suited to industrial markets where stability is important, Solid State
Drives have a place in the computing landscape for the right kind of applications. For the time being, SSD drives may be suitable alternatives in notebook computers where power savings and robustness offer genuine advantages over mechanical counterparts. Where desktop computers are concerned, the SuperTalent FSD28GC25M SSD has its place, and that place does not include your average PC. Cost is a big hurdle here, and so are its bandwidth limitations.
