This isn't an old 9600GT GPU making a comeback with 1GB of GDDR3 memory, this new Geforce 9600GT graphics card from Gigabyte uses the 'revision B' nVidia 'G94' GPU; it's built with a smaller manufacturing process, has a physically smaller silicon die, uses less power and consequently runs cooler.

Overclocking Report and Test System Specs

Overclocking Results: |
|
Since the Gigabyte GV-N96TSL-1GI
videocard is built on a 55nm process I expect it will handle overclocking more
elegantly than the older 65nm G94 GPU. As usual,
overclocking was done through nVidia's nTune utility
which unlocks GPU and memory clock speed. PCSTATS started with the GPU
first, pausing to test the results with a quick 3D benchmark before continuing.
The Geforce 9600GT core is clocked by default at 650MHz. Starting with the GPU first, the speed was quickly
overclocked to 700MHz, then 733MHz and 777MHz. Finally we went for the
gusto with an 850MHz core clock! Although the GV-N96TSL-1GI did manage to pass
through some initial stability testing, artifacts quickly came to light. In the
end we settled for a GPU overclock of 811 MHz.
We then
turned our attention to the 1GB of GDDR3 memory clocked by default at 900MHz
(dual-pumped to yield a Double Data Rate operating speed of 1800MHz). The
Gigabyte GV-N96TSL-1GI was overclocked aggressively with nTune to a speed of
2100MHz, which remained stable through our overclocking tests.
Ultimately,
PCSTATS was easily able to overclock the Gigabyte GV-N96TSL-1GI videocard to a
core clock speed of 811MHz, and push the memory to 2100MHz! That's a
great result for a passive videocard!
Prelude to Benchmarks
The details of how the Gigabyte
GV-N96TSL-1GI videocard was configured for benchmarking; the
specific hardware, software drivers, operating system and benchmark versions are
indicated below. All benchmarks for the videocard were run in Windows Vista
Ultimate, the reference video cards were tested in both Windows XP and Vista for
the DX10 benchmarks.
PCSTATS is in the process of making the transition to a Windows Vista and
Intel CPU test platform, so keep this in mind as you scan the benchmark results.
In the second column are the general specs for the reference cards this Geforce
9600GT videocard is to be compared against. Please take a moment to look over
PCSTATS test system configurations before moving on to the individual benchmark
results on the next page.

Benchmark results are organized by GPU manufacturer first
(AMD/ATI or nVidia), then by GPU generation, and then by GPU class (high end,
mainstream, value). This approach provides a clearer view of how performance can
differ from generation to generation, and class to previous generation. The
product being tested is marked with the red colour bar.
