Iometer
is an I/O subsystem measurement and characterization tool for single and
clustered systems. It was originally developed by the Intel Corporation, but
since 2003 it was relaunched by the Open Source Development Lab. IOMeter can be
used to simulate hard drive performance by specifying I/O operations to any
physical drive.
PCSTATS I/O Meter settings were set to write to an 8GB
sector of the hard drive with four outstanding IOs to simulate writing to an
operating system. Each test was run for three minutes. Higher bandwidth (MB/s)
and lower latencies (ms) are better.

Random
4KB read performance is a mixed bad for the Plextor PX-128M1S, with overall
average speeds below that of the Seagate Barracuda XT. Average latency also ends
up being about double that of the Seagate drive.

Write
speeds fare considerably better for the Plextor PX-128M1S, with faster write
performance and lower latencies. Small file write performance is critical to
operations like application loading, so the PX-128M1S's high bandwidth and low
latencies do quite well here.

Sequential read tests are also a strong suit for the
PX-128M1S, and in limited-sector write tests it can actually exceed Plextor's
speed ratings.

Sequential writes average our the speed of the Plextor
PX-128M1S, with performance that's a little better than a conventional hard
drive. Maximum latencies are also a bit better than a standard hard drive.
