The FlipDisk has the capabilities to connect to a
parallel port or type 2 PCMCIA interface on a laptop. Ideally designed for
PCMCIA interfaces, the Flip Disk has some unique features which its name draws
from. Located on the underside of the paperback sized device is nestled a PCMCIA
adapter card. This card enables the device to be attached, once it has be
'fliped' open.
Amacom has taken a design stance with this device
that it should be as portable, and simple to use as possible. By
locating the interface on the device they remove the hassle of lugging
around cables and power supplies. When the Flip Disk is connected to the PCMCIA
port no external power source is necessary.
With the PCMCIA-adaper flipped out, the drive can be
inserted into any PCMCIA port. The adapter has been designed with
a double hinged joint, so the device will sit flat. Small hand grips
are positioned on the plastic hinge to allow firm griping when removing or installing the
device. While the curves on the Flip Disk would seem to
imply their use as a hand grip, they emphasize gripping from the hinge joint in its literature to ensure
the components are well supported during their installation and removal. This hinge is also the weakest link
in the device.
