If you're a computer enthusiast, you're likely already familiar with Intel's Core i7 processors, which have been widely hailed as the fastest desktop processors available on the market today. Introduced at the end of 2008, Intel's newest desktop processors are finally maturing and becoming more accessible in the market. It's time to take a look a fresh look at the Core i7 processor.

32-Bit CPU Calculation Benchmarks: Super Pi, wPrime2.0
SuperPI
calculates the number PI to 1 Million digits in this raw number crunching
benchmark. The benchmark is fairly diverse and allows the user to change the
number of digits of PI that can be calculated from 16 Thousand to 32 Million.
The benchmark, which uses 19 iterations in the test, is set 1 Million digits.
Lower
calculation times are better. SuperPi is not multi-threaded.

| | Although it isn't multi-threaded, Super Pi still loves the
Core i7 920 processor and Intel's instruction sets. The closest competition here
is not from AMD's quad-core processor, but instead from Intel's own Core 2 Duo
E8500
wPrime uses a recursive call of Newton's method for
estimating functions, with f(x)=x2-k, where k is
the number we're sqrting, until Sgn(f(x)/f'(x)) does not equal that of the
previous iteration, starting with an estimation of k/2. It then uses an
iterative calling of the estimation method a set amount of times to increase the
accuracy of the results. It then confirms that n(k)2=k to ensure the calculation was correct. It repeats
this for all numbers from 1 to the requested maximum.
Lower
calculation times are better. wPrime is multi-threaded.

wPrime really shows what's
capable with HyperThreading. While the Phenom II is actually a little more
efficient core-for-core against the Core i7 920, being able to use the eight
logical cores of the Core i7 920 through HyperThreading allows it to claim the
fastest speed overall.
