Nero shows us how the Plextor PX-LB950UE stacks up when
tasked with reading a BD-R disk. In this test the advertised read speed is 8x,
the system achieves that speed.
Easy Blu-ray
Writer & Frustrating Blu-ray Movie Playback
From a performance standpoint the Plextor PX-LB950UE
drive did well for itself by meeting all of
its different recordable media speed ratings. There were a few hitches with writing, but PCSTATS is chalking
that one up to a cheap USB 3.0 PCIe x1 add-on card. Subsequent BD-R write
sessions over eSATA cable ran smoothly.
BD-R read performance was great. It's important to stress that you'll definitely want a quick
computer with a massive amount of hard drive space and plenty of memory if you're
thinking about burning BD-R 25GB media. The burning software typically caches all the
data to memory before attempting the burn, so drive space is
crucial.
Since the Plextor PX-LB950UE would not recognize
the '10,000 BC' blu-ray movie PCSTATS uses for testing we're a little unsure how to ultimately
gauge the Plextor PX-LB950UE 12x external blu-ray writer for Blu-ray movie
watching. Plextor's
PlexUtilities troubleshooting software was able to scan this Blu-ray movie disk and report back no defects.
The PX-LB950UE failed to recognize the movie we had on hand yet the Blu-ray disk was not
damaged? I suspect a few readers will suggest using this DVD software or that,
but in this case the movie didn't show up in Windows Explorer,
indicating that the optical drive was the fault point. Why it wouldn't read
a Blu-ray movie produced by Warner Brothers is not known.
Retailing for around $220, the Plextor PX-LB950UE is an easy way to add
BD-R data archiving to just about any recent PC with an eSATA or USB
3.0 port and plenty of spare hard drive space. Plextor bundles this external
Blu-ray reader with the tools to get the job done; Cyberlink's BD
suite, as well as is own PlexUtilities software. The software has everything you need to read/write
Blu-ray discs, burn CDs and DVDs, as well as a few utilities for
creating CD labels.
By most measures this
would be a great external Blu-ray writer, however because the Plextor PX-LB950UE failed to play
a commercial Blu-ray movie PCSTATS cannot recommend this drive.
