The AMD Socket A Athlon CPU's is the PIII alternative for computer users demanding high-end performance, but without the high price tag that is usually attached to it.

Quake III Benchmarks
Quake III Demo 1:
Settings: Using my .cfg, 32Bit colour, detail slider on full, gibs on,
marks off, coloured lighting off, vertex lighting.
Athlon @ 1000Mhz / Geforce2
235Mhz / 365Mhz:
800x600 = 175 FPS
1024x768 = 144.3 FPS
We see a nice 15FPS jump in
performance for the 200Mhz overclock. Unfortunately, it's becoming quite obvious
that the Geforce2 is simply too memory bandwidth limited, and is preventing the
CPU from flexing all of its muscles.
Is 1Ghz
enough? No it isn't! I had to try for more, and 1050Mhz was the highest speed
that I was able to get from this CPU, not bad from a humble 800Mhz CPU to begin
with. The 10x105Mhz =
1050Mhz was fast, but raising the FSB a bit would help memory performance, as well as
allowing the Quake III scores to be kicked up a notch. I settled upon, 9.5x110Mhz =
1045Mhz...

SiSoft Sandra @ 1045Mhz:
CPU Benchmark
The CPU Dhrystone marks still trail the reference Athlon system,
but beats it in the FPU Whetstone category, no worries here.
CPU Multimedia
Benchmark
At 1045Mhz, it outclasses all of the other systems, as expected
of course.
CPU Memory Benchmark
Like a broken record... Once, again the above average
scores, is a testament to the great tweakability and memory speed of the Abit
KT7-RAID, the raised FSB also added 10Mhz to the memory bus too.
