One thing you might not think about is that with traditional IDE CDRW's, if you are wise you will usually not do much of anything while burning off CD's.

Test System Configuration

Processor Intel Celeron 550 Mhz
Memory 128 Megs PC-100 SDRAM
Hard Drive Quantum 3 Gig
Operating System Windows Millenium

I thought this was a bit interesting for a couple of reasons. It actually rated slower than a "standard" 8x drive according to Sandra 2k, considering the speed of an 8x it isn't all that bad. Not to mention the CD I used for testing had a couple of hefty zip files, and some smaller text only types which could have thrown things off. As for the "feel" of the speed, it isn't meant for a screaming fast reader and I didn't take it as such. A drive, right out the box, performing close to specs with no tweaks or hacks. That's right, no I did not OC it, yet..... Well, not much else to say bout this sweet item, other than if speed is not a major concern, and portability and coolness factors outweigh the need to burn as fast as humanly possible, this is definitely on my list of got to have one's. With all that said, check out QPS. They have some other optical solutions sure to please as much as this one.
