More Disk Benchmarks
CD Speed is a CD-ROM
benchmark which can test the most important features of a CD-ROM drive. In this
particular test we use a pressed Audio CD with about 65 minutes of audio on it
as the test disk. CDROM's in general have a harder time processing audio data,
and hence the results can be drastically slower than that of data tests
alone.

Audio disk
benchmarks peg the Plextor PXW4012TA in a fairly unflattering position -
average speeds drop down to 8X - making it one of the slowest
on this test platform. These results may not be 100% accurate as you'll notice
the CPU usage jumps up to 69% at 8X speeds. Seek times are also
slower over the mean average of the other drives we have
tested.

Sandra shoots
out some good
Drive Index results for the PXW4012TA drive, but access times are pretty slow
here; 238ms is more than twice that of the next drive but notice that Buffered
Read (23MB/s) is very, very large. The next comparable Buffered Read would be from
the DD-500M at just 19MB/s.
Nero's CD Speed burn tests are done twice, once with a CDR
rated to 1x-24x burn speed, and a CD-RW rated to 4x-10x. Each disk was
test with files of about 640MB in
size. This test is done by simply placing blank
recording media into the burner and running CD Speed 99; the software will
detect if it is CD-R or CD-R/W media and run the appropriate tests.

The Plextor PXW4012TA optical drive is rated
at 40X for CD-R's and in our tests
the drive did top out at that speed. Average speeds reigned in at a more modest 30.59X
across the disk, which is still very good. The CDRW media test capped out at 12X which is consistent with the drives
rating. Obviously, as a burner the Plextor PXW4012TA meets
its listed specs which is something we always like to see. While
average CDR burn rates are never at the maximum speed for the
entire disk, the Plextor PXW4012TA does manage to pull its
weight.
