Nero CD-Speed, Sandra benchmarks
CD Speed is a CD-ROM benchmark which can test the
most important features of a CD-ROM drive. In this particular test we use a
pressed CD-ROM with about 640MB of data as the test disk. Using a CDR or CDRW as
the test disk may (or may not) impact the results slightly, so the pressed disk
is the de facto standard.

During
the CD-Speed data transfer tests, the CPU usage remained pretty good, at 11%, which is respectable.
Average disk speeds sit at 30.8x times which is lower than the listed 40X
speed on the drive. However the drive peaks at just over 40X which proves
its rating. Access times are inline with the rest of the reference optical drives, and
while disk recognition times are slow at 9sec, the disk load time
is a slim 1.1sec.
CD Speed is a CD-ROM
benchmark which can test the most important features of a CD-ROM drive. In this
particular test we use a pressed Audio CD with about 65 minutes of audio on it
as the test disk. CDROM's in general have a harder time processing audio data,
and hence the results can be drastically slower than that of data tests
alone.

In the audio
spectrum, the SW-224 hits a nice speed of 22X, which compared to the other
drives is about mid-road. CPU utilization jumps to a heavy 23%, and disk access times
remain fairly good at 86ms for random seek.

Sandra is designed
to test the theoretical power of a complete system and individual components.
The numbers taken though are again, purely theoretical and may not represent
real world performance. Unfortunately we do not have the test results
from the SW-216 to include in this comparison because an older version of Sandra
was originally used to test it.

Sandra again pegs the SW-224 as a middle of the road optical drive (remember
it is just a 40X CDROM) with a Drive Index of 1745. The buffered
read rates are a bit slower than the SC-152, a 52X CDROM, but
again we are dealing with a difference in speeds here.
