Introduce a "new" display technology like LCD and suddenly everything which is based on a Cathode Ray Tube (CRT) is old, obsolete, and totally uncool.

Final Evaluation Notes & Conclusions
CRT Display Test |
Test Notes and Observations |
|
Geometry: |
Excellent geometry for this flat screen
(front and back) CRT display. Test grids remained very square, though with
a ruler up to the screen we could see that the
lines bowed out a bit at the center region of the display. The
amount of skew is almost unnoticeable however.
|
Brightness and Contrast: |
Good contrast from 1%-9%
whiteness and white test at 100% is nice and bright.
|
HV Test: |
Vertical trace lines remain stable throughout
the three bar test. During full screen test, when white is off, the black screen brightens somewhat.
Trace lines remain stationary though.
|
Colour: |
The white test screen is bright and very
consistent over the full screen area as are the blue and green. The red test screen seems
a little pale and washed out, but that generally seems to be the case
with most monitors we've tested.
|
Convergence: |
White test grids are nearly perfect - there is
some very slight loss of convergence at the upper left corner,
but the red is not likely to be noticeable. The purple test grid
shows a small blue halo though out most of the screen and the yellow test screen
is of the same order as the white test grid. Finally,
the aqua test grid appears perfect. The RGB test pattern displays very nicely.
|
Focus: |
Grey areas show some Moire lines and corner
squares are not quite as in focus as the center white square. The upper
left test patter shows the most divergence which may
explain why the convergence test for this area also showed some bleed through. In general though, the outer patterns are still
readable, and well defined.
|
Resolution: |
Resolution is best at the center of the screen, at
each of the four corners, the horizontal 1pixel lines blend in a little
too much and almost appear as a grey shade on the all black test screen.
The same patterns on a white background are a little more defined.
|
Moire: |
Good, again some moire lines show up on the grey 1 pixel cube screens.
|
Readability: |
Text is represented best at the center of
the flat screen, and is slightly less sharp at the outer edges. Even so, compared to a standard curved CRT display
the difference is dramatically better on the Viewsonic P95F+. Since the screen is flat
on both sides of the glass there is not distortion, and almost no divergence
whatsoever. For professional work, this display offers one of the best CRT
pictures we have tested to date!

Oddly enough, Viewsonic are not a manufacturer we have had
a lot of experience with around here, so it was with a high set of expectations
that we began reviewing the P95f+B 19" CRT monitor. From the moment the screen
flickered to life, it was evident that Viewsonic might just have a real keeper
on their hands.
With a 19" screen size, 0.25-0.27mm aperture grille, the P95f+B has a very clean
display with very nice undistorted image quality and an affordable retail price tag of a little
over
$320USD.
Viewsonic's "PerfectFlat" technology means that the face of
this monitor is nice and flat, and the inner surface
has just a slight curve in the horizontal axis. Having seen some other manufacturers
adaptations of a flat face CRT, where the internal side of the
tube is curved in both directions rather more significantly, I'm apt to be a little less
judgmental on the marketing of "flatness" here. The technology works well, and
that is what we like to see.
Colour representation and geometry on the Viewsonic
P95f+B are very good for comparably sized
CRT displays, and with the addition of the ARAG anti-reflection screen treatment,
background light sources are not very distracting.
Other
features like UltraBrite have made a less resounding impression
on me. While I can agree that a nice bright screen may better for
DVD playback, or a few rounds of UT2003, the
over-brightness causes some luminance bleeding and can be a bit hard on the
eyes after an extend period of time.
Ultimately, while the Viewsonic P95f+B has managed
to impress us with its visual qualities, representation of geometry,
and gorgeous screen characteristics, there is one component which fell
below the grade. The control panel while very undistracting, is also very
difficult to decipher and this can make adjusting the display somewhat
troublesome. In any event, despite this poor adaptation of industrial design, we
were significantly pleased with the Viewsonic P95F+B to still give it an
Editor's Choice Award. Viewsonic have produced a very nice display, at a very
affordable price, and those two qualities make it easily recommendable!
