Vantec iON2 350W Power Supply Review
The worst
thing an enthusiast can do is equip their PC with an inadequate power supply.
Bad power can create as many system problems as bad memory; from data storage problems
to intermittent crashes, or in worst case a pile of fried circuit boards and a puff of
blue smoke!
Considering all the junk power supplies offered with
computer cases these days, finding a power supply that's right
for your system requirements can be quite a challenge. But don't get
me wrong, not all power supplies bundled in with cases are junk; most will work
just fine with moderate loads, and others just as well with light
loads. The one's to watch out for are the generic power supplies tossed
in with cases retailing as low as $60... if a store is selling a 400W power supply
for $20, or one in a case that costs just $60, its buyer beware!
After
all, a really high
quality ATX power supply can cost over $200. When you
start to consider EPS 12V or server specific power supplies,
the prices can skyrocket to $600 or more! As PCstats looks at the
brand new 350Watt Vantec
iON2 power supply, keep what we've just mentioned in mind. Vantec have a pretty good
reputation in the power supply field, although it is not the companies main focus.
As a
friend mine named Dan learned, going with a cheap no-name power supply can be very costly in the long run if it fails. When the power
supply he had in his case 'blew up,' it took the motherboard, DDR
memory, optical drives and HDD along with it! Now, let's take a close look
at the Vantec ION2 power supply.
The Vantec iON2 is definitely one of the "cooler" looking
PSUs in its black housing, braided cables and black connectors. The Ion2 is
equipped with one large temperature controlled 120mm fan to cool the inside of
the PSU, and keep noise to a minimum. There is no exhaust fan here, just a
hexagonal grid for external venting from the one large intake fan. The ION2 also
makes use of pre-sleeved the power supply cables, which really makes cable
management a whole lot easier.
