Overclocking Comparison and Conclusions
It's
great to see how individual memory modules stack up against one another under
stock configuration, but we're also going to show how they compare when
overclocked. The overclocking results are listed below for all the memory
modules that have recently crossed our test bench. The higher the speed on the
Intel platform, the better. The higher the speed on the AMD platform with lower
the latencies, the better.
The
Corsair XMS Xpert TWINXP1024-3200XL dual-channel memory was not the best
overclocker we've seen, but it can be pushed a bit. Our benchmarks showed some
nice improvements from overclocking also.
Conclusions
In our set of
benchmarks, these XMS Xpert TWINXP1024-3200XL modules showed the performance
we've come to expect from Corsair. Scores were on par to those of other recent
'enthusiast' PC3200 DDR modules we've tested, and increased significantly when
the memory was overclocked, especially on the Intel test system.
This Corsair Xpert memory was not so great for
overclocking headroom though, pulling off a very average increase on the AMD
test system (albeit while maintaining strict 2-2-2-5 settings for best
performance) and topping off at an unremarkable 470MHz DDR on the Intel box with
CAS settings of 2.5-3-3-6. Perhaps the extra bulk and complexity imposed by the
display circuits hindered the memory here?
If you
have a heavily modded PC with a case window, you pretty much have to consider
these babies the next time you are in the market for memory. The LED indicator
memory modules we reviewed previously were pretty, but these are more so, and
actually useful too. Also, it's hard to overestimate the pleasure of having your
memory continually scrolling '0wnz0r3d j00' or something similar when LAN
partying...
We love
to see innovation in the products we review here at PCstats, and innovation is
just what Corsair has shown with the XMS Xpert TWINXP1024-3200XL kit. At a cost
of about $485CAN ($391US), innovation comes with a
price though. It comes down to this: If you've got a case with a window, you
probably already know whether you need these in it or not. If you don't have a
window, you can easily get equivalent quality memory from Corsair or another
manufacturer much cheaper without the 'bling bling.'
