The MSI NX8600GTS-T2D256E-OC videocard comes from the factory overclocked to a speed of 700 MHz core and 2100 MHz memory. With that large heatsink though you know the NX8600GTS-T2D256E-OC is begging to be pushed even further. ;-) Starting with the core, first let's see if PCSTATS can squeeze even more out of it.
The MSI NX8600GTS-T2D256E-OC core speed was increased ~7
MHz at a time using nVIDIA's nTune software. The GeForce 8600GTS core handled the higher loads very well and temperatures did not increase much thanks to the efficient heatsink selected by MSI. The G84 core peaked at a top speed of 774 MHz, and unfortunately anything higher caused nTune to complain the videocard failed its internal driver test.
Next up was the 256MB of GDDR3 memory. Humming along at a smooth 2.1 GHz, the memory is already pretty heavily overclocked. This time around clock speeds were increased in ~20 MHz steps. The memory easily reached 2.2 GHz which is a very nice overclock.
The memory didn't go much further though, it stopped dead at 2.24 GHz. Interestingly enough, nTune would not complain but the videocard did lock up during benchmarks and game tests.
The GeForce 8600GTS core and memory had no problems running at maximum clock speed together.
Prelude to Benchmarks
The details of how the MSI NX8600GTS-T2D256E-OC test system was configured
for benchmarking; the specific hardware, software drivers, operating system and
benchmark versions are indicated below. In the second column are the general
specs for the reference platforms this nVIDIA GeForce 8600GTS 256MB based
videocard is to be compared against. Please take a moment to look over PCSTATS
test system configurations before moving on to the individual benchmark results
on the next page.
