It's great to see how individual memory stacks up against the competition under stock configurations, but we're also going to show how it compares when overclocked. With performance in mind, we're going to compare the maximum overclocked results of the various DDR2/3 memory modules PCSTATS has tested in the past which are listed below. Remember, just because memory is clocked fast doesn't mean it's the best thing for a computer. Timings are also important, and getting the right ratio of both is the real key to performance based overclocking!

The Super Talent W186IUX2G8 DDR3 memory does very well, but it will be interesting to see where the lines are drawn as more DDR3 memory comes into the lab. The speeds are pretty amazing, particularly considering the standard is still in its infancy.

Fast Just Got Faster: DDR3

DDR3 is a necessary evolution in the life of system memory if computers are to properly support quad core processors in the coming years.

Every major memory manufacturer has launched a handful of DDR3 parts, but with anything this new prices have yet to fall to more comfortable levels. Over time enthusiast grade DDR3 will be more affordable, right now it will only find its way into the hands of an exclusive crowd.

From what PCSTATS as witnessed here, Super Talent certainly has put together a good 2GB set of DDR3. The Supertalent W1866UX2G8 DDR3-1866 dual channel DDR3 memory kit is rated to run at 1866 MHz with 8-8-8-24 memory timings, and a voltage of 1.9V. With a retail price of $635 CDN ($605 US, £300 GBP), it is expensive as system memory goes, but competitively positioned as DDR3 memory of this class sits.

In terms of performance the Super Talent W1866UX2G8 DDR3-1866 memory lived up to our expectations, and then some. Performance was comparable to the set Corsair DOMINATOR Twin3X2048-1800C7D memory tested previously. The Supertalent W1866UX2G8 overclocked well, reaching 1780 MHz with tight 7-7-7-20 timings and 1900 MHz with its default 8-8-8-24 timings.

If you're in the market to put together a new computer on the Intel P35 (or X38) Express platform, and want to be future ready for 2008 and beyond, go DDR3. Super Talent's W1866UX2G8 is one of the few sets of DDR3 memory that's readily available and you certainly won't be disappointed with what it can unleash.
