The Intel P35 Express chipset is a monster overclocker, and of the motherboards that have passed through the PCSTATS test labs most have rocked. We'll be overclocking the Asus BLITZ Formula motherboard with equally high expectations, so let's get things started.
The test configuration consists of an Intel Core
2 Duo E6750 processor and a 2GB set of Corsair's DOMINATOR Twin2X2048-8888C4DF memory. Corsair,
for fresh memory every time, it's Corsair! The processor multiplier was set to 6x, and the memory to run at DDR2-667 MHz mode. Starting at 333 MHz FSB, the Asus BLITZ Formula's clock speed was increased in 5 MHz increments.
Without any problems, the BLITZ Formula motherboard hit the 400 MHz FSB mark. In no time, and without any voltage tweaks either, the BLITZ Formula reached 450 MHz. To get past that speed, the Intel P35 Express voltage was increased to 1.36V. Good so far, but at 480 MHz the Northbridge voltage needed another bump, this time to 1.44V.
Things progressed easily after that and the Asus
BLITZ Formula motherboard easily rose past 500 MHz (norrthbridge voltage to 1.5V) and settled on 535 MHz. There were more voltage options available, however the Intel P35 Express Northbridge got quite hot and we didn't want to risk damaging the board. Now I see why Asus provide a waterblock on the BLITZ Formula.... Still, an overclock to 535 MHz FSB is really sweet if you ask me!
ASUS BLITZ Formula BIOS:
In the Extreme Tweaker section you'll find the coveted overclocking options. ASUS
allow you to adjust the CPU clock multiplier and motherboard clock speed from 200-800
MHz, in 1 MHz increments. Here you'll also find the memory timing adjustments and
Asus includes all the usual options. There is CAS Latency and a few extras that will
take you some time to figure out.
Further down on the page we find the ASUS
BLITZ Formula's voltage options. One thing is certain, with the values that Asus provides, make
sure you know what you're doing before experimenting. If try too high a value you may
kill your motherboard, memory and processor. Asus does its part by putting
the really dangerous values in red.
Prelude to Benchmarks
The details of how the Asus BLITZ Formula
motherboard test system was configured for benchmarking, including the specific
hardware, software drivers, operating system and benchmark versions are
indicated below. In the second column are the general specs for the reference
platforms this Intel P35 Express based system is to be compared against. Please
take a moment to look over PCSTATS test system configurations before moving on
to the individual benchmark results.
