Overclocking is alive and well! PCSTATS has all the details
you need to see at a glance to know how the various videocards tested perform
relative to each other. The chart we've compiled below lists the highest
overclocked core and memory clock speeds we were able to achieve while
maintaining 100% stability. Results are grouped by GPU class, and ranked by
highest memory overclock to lowest.
The Asus
EN9600GT Top/HTDI/512M Geforce 9600GT videocard ships from the factory pre
overclocked to 720MHz/2000MHz GPU/memory. In the PCSTATS labs we overclocked the
GPU a little higher to 763MHz before things fizzled out. The memory overclocked
to a speed of 2254MHz.
Asus Pre-overclocked GeForce 9600GT
The Asus EN9600GT
Top/HTDI/512M is a great mainstream videocard for under $160 CDN ($160 USD, £80 GBP), that's
about $50 less than the new Radeon HD4850's will set you back.
If you're on a budget and crave DirectX10 gaming, the
nVidia Geforce 9600GT family delivers, doubly so if you decide to team them up
in SLI mode.
For it's class, Asus' Geforce 9600GT offers good
results and an affordable sticker price. Aside from the pre-overclocked nature
of the Asus EN9600GT
Top/HTDI/512M, you're getting the same basic Geforce 9600GT feature set
available in every other card. If you wish to overclock the EN9600GT further,
PCSTATS was able to push the Asus EN9600GT Top/HTDI/512M to respectable 763MHz
GPU, 2254MHz memory.
Noise levels were generally low to moderate while
testing the Asus EN9600GT Top/HTDI/512M videocard. Given the choice between a
sometimes loud single slot heatsink and a slightly quieter dual slot videocard
cooler, we'd rather have the single slot heatsink to be honest.
In the face of the Radeon HD4850's, I think I would opt
for that videocard if building an entirely new computer with a P45 motherboard.
If you're already using an nForce based motherboard, or are looking to add
a second Geforce 9600GT for SLI, the Asus EN9600GT Top/HTDI/512M is a good
mainstream choice.
