In case you missed it, Gigabyte hosted an exclusive
LAN Party in partnership with Canada Computers and the Canadian distributor Supercom a few days ago in
Markham for its new line of enthusiast grade G1 Killer gaming motherboards. These
gaming oriented boards start at $400 for the
G1.Guerrilla and work their way up to the
performance tuned G1.Sniper at $500. The flagship, extra
large XL-ATX sized G1.Assassin motherboard goes for about $600.
Expensive hardware... sure, but that didn't stop Gigabyte from giving away
a complete G1.Assassin gaming system to one very lucky gamer who attended the
free event. The computer system came complete with an Intel Core i7 950 processor,
6GB of Corsair Vengeance DDR3, an Intel 80GB Solid State Drive, nVidia Geforce
GTX570 videocard, Thermaltake Element V case, Corsair H70 watercooling system,
Antec 750W earth watts power supply, Microsoft
Windows 7 operating system and LG BluRay optical drive! For good measure,
Gigabyte even tossed in copy of the game Call of Duty
- that's about $2,300 worth of FREE
hardware!

Next time, this could be you...
Cool prizes aside (Gigabyte gave away a pile of other swag, Corsair gave out an H70 water cooling system and
a pair of HS1 headphones) the real focus of this Lan Party
was to let gamers test drive the Gigabyte G1.Assassin gaming motherboard
over a couple rounds of Call of Duty against other attendees
and check out the board's two siblings.
All three motherboards are based on the Intel X58
chipset and thus support LGA1366 Intel Core i7 processors with up
to 24GB of RAM. What makes these particular motherboards suited to gaming is
that each is equipped with an onboard Killer E2100 Dedicated NPUs from Bigfoot Networks . The Killer E2100
controller addresses online gaming network lag by prioritizing bandwidth allocation. The
chip has 1GB of dedicated DDR2 memory to help
offload network traffic from the CPU, freeing it up to
do other important computing tasks. In other words, the Killer E2100
is there to reduce ping times.
The
two higher-end motherboards, the G1.Sniper and G1.Assassin, pack in an onboard Creative Soundblaster
X-Fi Digital Audio Processor (20K2) with X-Fi Xtreme Fidelity and EAX
AHD 5.0 technology. Creative's X-Fi soundcard has
128MB of Hynix DDR RAM all to itself and the headphone jacks
are spiked with 150ohm amplifiers to better suit professional headphones. Each
of the G1 motherboards supports at least three-way Crossfire/SLI, with
the larger G1.Assassin platform supporting up to four PCI Express 2.0 x16
videocards.
There are quite a
few other tweaks and design choices built into these boards to help
hard core FPS gamers unleash serious latency free destruction on their virtual adversaries. Top of
the list is the onboard Bigfoot Networks Killer E2100 controller,
we'll go over some of the major features of each G1.Killer
motherboard in a moment, first a little more
about what went down at the Gigabyte / CanadaComputers LAN Party.
Test Driving a Gigabyte G1.Assassin Gaming
System

Gamers played several rounds of Call of Duty to thrush out the performance
qualities of the Gigabyte G1.Assassin gaming systems.
This dedicated gamer brought his own head set in for the Lan Party.
The full gaming system was built around a Thermaltake Element V case with
Phillips LCD display and Thermaltake gaming keyboard.

The Thermaltake Element V case has way too many hard drive / optical drive bays
given that each one of these computers was built on a single Intel 80GB SSD and single
LG Blu-Ray ODD. The Gigabyte G1.Assassin motherboard comes with a 5.25" bay that
features dual USB 3.0 ports, an e-SATA jack and Max-Boost overclocking
button.
