For this
test a single 8.5GB file is copied from an OCZ Vertex 2 SSD system disk to the
test disk (write to), from the test disk to the OCZ Vertex 2 SSD (read from),
and from the test disk to itself (read and write to self). While this test is
heavily influenced by the SATA controller and by the number of files being
transferred, it provides a good indication of the sustained transfer rates
capable from the hard drive being tested. Higher transfer speeds are best.

A simple
copying test in Windows Explorer illustrates the basic advantages this 1TB
Western Digital RE4 drive brings to the table.
Breaking the Reliability
Barrier?
Hard drive capacity is always on the up and up,
with the RE4 series of drives, Western Digital has sought to improve reliability
for 100% active use situations by bridging the gap between desktop storage
solutions and purpose built sever storage solutions like SAS.
What's notable about Western Digital's 3.5" desktop 1TB WD RE4 hard drive is its
two platter 7200RPM spindle speed, 64MB of onboard cache and 3Gb/s SATA II, NCQ
support and 1.2million hour MTBF rating.
As we saw in the benchmarks, the 1TB Western Digital RE4
drive performs slightly better in most respects than a competing Western Digital
Caviar Black drive. On the price per GB front, the 1TB Western Digital RE4
disk runs about $0.129/GB, or $129USD. While SSDs are markedly faster, at a
price of nearly ~$1.58/GB (120GB) SSDs are hardly cost effective for storing GBs
of movie, television and music data.
Hard drives are the fundamental building blocks of every
computer system, it's good to know that Western Digital is so confident about
about its WD RE4 series that the company backs each drive with a 5 year
warranty! That's commitment. Whatever type of PC you're building, the 1TB
Western Digital RE4 is a worthwhile "enterprise class" storage device to
consider.
