Evergreen 20Gig Hot Drive Review
Evergreen 20Gig Hot Drive Review - PCSTATS
Right out of the big blue box came what looked like an iMac accessory. It was sleek, it was translucent, and part of it was blue.... and it was fast!

Looking closer at the Hot Drive

The circuitry inside the HotDrive contains an additional 12V power source, and two Fire Wire connections and drive on/off switch.

Seeing as this is a 20Gig portable drive, that accounts for a lot of precious data. We wanted to know just what type of hard drive made it into the Hot Drive, and what would be holding all those important files of ours. I like Maxtor so I was pleased to see a 20Gig Maxtor 92041u4 UDMA drive. The drive was connected to the Fire Wire circuitry via an 80pin UDMA cable. Which leads to the conclusion that the entire HotDrive is sort of upgradeable.

Just think, in a year or so, 100Gig drives may be standard (or at least available). With the HotDrive using a standard 3.5" internal hard drive as the basis for its storage, one could potentially upgrade it to a larger drive as the technology progressed, and thus this peripheral would not have to go the way of the antequated 100Mb Zip drive. Just think, an upgradeable peripheral. Imagine!

However if you are not one to break out the screwdriver and start taking your peripherals apart, then smile, as Evergreen has plans to bring out drives with up to 75Gigs of storage.

Now let's take a look at some benchmarks!
