Looking closer at this
mobile hard drive rack we can see a few special features which have been
included. The most prominent of which is a 30mm x 30mm cooling fan. This a bonus for anyone thinking about installing a 7200 or perhaps 10,000 RPM drive in a device like this. Unfortunately the fan doesn't look like it can have much of an effect, as most of the compartment in the rear where the hard drive sits is closed off.
The front of the caddy does have a series of vents, with some thin foam to
cut down on dust build up, but the cooling effect is no doubt muted by the small
exhaust port in the rear of the caddy.
For those of you with a love of colourful blinking lights, rejoice, the KF-21
has two. One LED notifies you if the drive is seated properly, and the lock is
engaged. The other LED serves as a drive activity LED, so you can visually
monitor your hard drive.
Conclusions:
If you are in the market for a removable hard drive rack, the KF-21 is
definitely worth getting. Not only is it well built, but it is well designed. The
small features you may not have even noticed, are the ones that ensure the unit
works almost flawlessly under the most hectic of circumstances by removing any
human errors possible.
Cooling, though marginal is at least addressed, and one fan is better than no
fan. Dust filtering is a welcome addition to the bag of tricks this seemingly
simple device holds.
All in all, we are very satisfied with the unit, despite its high price tag.
As they say, if you are going to do it, might as well do it right the first
time. This removable hard drive rack follows that mantra to the
"t".
