Acer 99sl 19 inch CRT Monitor Review
Acer 99sl 19 inch CRT Monitor Review - PCSTATS
While the difference in price between a 17" and a 19" monitor is roughly $200, the benefit of a 19" is worth so much more.

The First Thing About a Monitor is...

The first thing you will notice if you have ever brought a 19" monitor back from the store and are about to set it up is getting it out of the box can be difficult. The easiest way we've found to do this is by tipping the box over, and removing the box from the monitor. There is no chance of dropping the monitor on a toe or something equally nasty this way. Then simply remove the protective Styrofoam and the plastic bag.

Next you'll want to attach the swivel base, which quickly snaps into place on the base of the screen. The base not only supports the giant screen but allows you to swivel and adjust the orientation to suite you taste.

Resolution and picture quality with this monitor is first rate. We increased resolution to the max value of 1600x1200, but at only 65Hz flicker was slightly distracting - considering our typical monitor is set to 75Hz. Colour quality and pixel definition remained sharp and true throughout our tests with the contrast and brightness settings. Often poorer quality monitors oversaturate at high brightness settings and the pixels become washed out and blurred. The Acer 99sl had none of these problems.

The Acer 99sl operates at a conservative number of settings, but enough that they fill out all the popular settings used. They are listed below:

Resolution Freq Hor. Freq Ver. Standard
640X480 31.5kHz 60Hz VESA
640x400 31.5kHz 70Hz VGA
800x600 46.9kHz 75Hz VESA
800x600 53.7kHz 85Hz VESA
1024x768 60.0kHz 75Hz VESA
1024x768 68.7kHz 85Hz VESA
1280x1024 80.0kHz 75Hz VESA
1280x1024 91.1kHz 85Hz VESA
1600x1200 81.3kHz 65Hz VESA

Controls on the front of the monitor are limited to the standard contrast / brightness. Additionally there are some function keys and one called the i-key. Now personally I am very tired of hearing everything called i-something... but the key does serve a nifty purpose so here goes. The i-key once pressed, automatically adjusts the display size and position of the screen to the optimum. How it knows what the optimum is not for me to guess, but on activating the key it did its thing. Incidentally, I didn't notice any visible differences ;-)

What kind of onscreen controls does the Acer 99sl have and how easy are they to adjust?
