As you can see from the Sandra benchmarks the two CPUs are head to head in terms of Dhrystone and Whetstone scores. But, the surprising memory scores can probably be attribute to the notorious low memory scores that are usually associated with the VIA Apollo 133A chipset. Of course that's not the entire performance picture. Let's look at some Quake III benchmarks.
Quake III demo Benchmark
Obviously, the Sandra benchmarks only show part of
the overall picture. You should never get hanged up on synthetic benchmarks
alone. The Quake III scores show the superiority of the desktop system, mainly
because of the graphics chipset. Even though we ran the Q3 benchmarks in the
fastest mode, thus minimizing the effects of the video card, the video still
played a very important role in overall performance. It's a shame we couldn't
get the Content Creation to work. We would have loved to see Windows 2D
performance. I have a feeling the results would have been very similar though.
