Epox 4B2A i845 P4 Motherboard
Epox 4B2A i845 P4 Motherboard - PCSTATS
Sometimes you have to wonder if the amount of effort that goes into the packaging of a motherboard is indicative of the level of engineering vested in it.

Test system specs and benchmarks

Test System Specs:
Computer: Intel Pentium 4 1.5GHz socket 478 processor
Epox EP-4B2A i845 Motherboard
VisonTek Geforce 3
256MB Twinmos PC166 SDRAM
60GB Samsung HDD, 5400RPM
Software: Windows 2000 SP1
DirectX 8.1 Beta
DetonatorXP 21.81
Benchmarks:

SiSoft Sandra 2001 LE
e-Testinglabs Benchmark Suite
3DMark 2001

We didn't have much luck at overclocking with this particular configuration, and were only able to coax this P4 chip into 1.77GHz post, and 1.71GHz boot. 1.71Ghz wasn't too bad, but not stable enough for Sysmark 2001 apparently - the benchmark froze part way through. Given the relatively minor increase in clock speed there isn't much in including those results here, so will just concentrate on the default speed results.

The Epox 4B2A does come with a very well equipped BIOS for the overclocker with a good deal of time on their hands to tweak around in however. In any case, lets move on to our first and most used benchmark, Sisoft's Sandra 2001SE:

Sisoft Sandra: CPU Benchmark
Setting: ALU: FPU/SSE2:
Epox 4B2A 15 x 100 MHz (1.5GHz) 2917 MIPS 788/1872 MFlops

Sisoft Sandra: Multimedia Benchmark
Setting: Integer: Floating point SSE2:
Epox 4B2A 15 x 100 MHz (1.5GHz) 6058 it/s 7424 it/s

Sisoft Sandra: Memory Bandwidth Benchmark
Setting: Int ALU: Float FPU:
Epox 4B2A 15 x 100 MHz (1.5GHz) 600 MB/s 611 MB/s
When placed head to head with a comparable system using RDRAM the i845 solutions have proven themselves no quite as adept. Record setting performance this isn't, but among i845 solutions it will be interesting to see which motherboards prove themselves better than the rest. Compared to a 1.7GHz socket 423 P4 the memory bandwidth benchmarks illustrate the largest differences between i850 RDRAM and i845 SDRAM mainboard solutions.

E-Testing labs Benchmarks:

WinMark 99
Setting: Business Disk High-end Disk: Business Graphics: High-end Graphics:
15 x 100 MHz (1.5GHz) 4500 10400 444 900

Content Creation Winstone 2001
Setting: Content Creation Winstone
15 x 100 MHz (1.5GHz) 47.1

Business Winstone 2001
Setting: Business Winstone
15 x 100 MHz (1.5GHz) 32.0

Again, the results here are on par with what we have been seeing all i845 based motherboards produce. The only real impartial benchmark is Business Winstone. If you wanted to compare the results here against the results for the i850 MSI 850pro2 you'd notice that the difference is only 5.4 points. Not much at all.

Finally, no round of benchmarks would be complete with out a little action from MadOnion's 3DMark2001. You have to admit, those 21.81 DetonatorXP drivers can make just about any system look amazing!

MadOnion 3DMark 2001
Setting: 3D Marks
15 x 100 MHz (1.5GHz) 5561
