Benchmarking and Testing Results
When it came down
to benchmarking the Dimension 2400, we had every intention of sticking purely to 'whole system'
benchmarks, in order to provide you with a clear idea of how this PC
would hold up to everyday use and content creation. Very mature, sober stuff. Of course,
our curiosity got the better of us. We could not resist running the system
through some 3D gaming benchmarks, just to see if it could handle them.
Could it? Well.... read on to find out the answer to that question.
SYSmark
2004 |
Source: Bapco |
|
SYSmark 2004 is BAPCo's latest revision
of the mainstream office productivity and Internet content creation benchmark
used to characterize the performance of the business client. It is based on a
foundation of extensive research into emerging usage models and computing trends
and incorporates the latest benchmarking methodologies to evaluate platform
technologies. SYSmark 2004 contains scientifically designed workloads that
represent the range of activities that an office productivity or Internet
content creation work may encounter. In addition with extensive validation
across multiple platforms, users can be sure of a consistent and reliable
performance comparison.
The Dell Dimension 2400 really
gets a workout under Sysmark 2004, and manages middle of the road scores
throughout, as we were expecting. The Celeron 2.4Ghz processor does not have the
raw grunt to excel in these content creation oriented benchmarks, but the scores
indicate that the Dimension 2400 would be capable and versatile as a home/office
system.
Winstone 2002 |

Content Creation Winstone 2002 is a system-level,
application-based benchmark that measures a PC's overall performance when
running top, Windows-based, 32-bit, content creation applications on Windows 98,
Windows 2000, Windows Me, or Windows XP.
Business Winstone 2002 is a system-level,
application-based benchmark that measures a PC's overall performance when
running today's top-selling Windows-based 32-bit applications on Windows 98,
Windows 2000 (SP6 or later), Windows Me, or Windows XP. Business Winstone
doesn't mimic what these packages do; it runs real applications through a series
of scripted activities and uses the time a PC takes to complete those activities
to produce its performance scores.
A
decent score on the first half of this test indicates the Dimension 2400's
ability to perform as a general office machine, but a poor content creation
result reinforces our notion that this machine is not intended to be used for
intensive applications like animation, and web development.
