The death effects are also
worthy of note. When zombies and enemy marines sustain massive damage, such as
from a close range shotgun blast, they simply disintegrate into a cloud of
debris and a skeleton which blows apart and crumbles to dust in a split second.
This is an incredible effect which is hard to get tired of. If you've seen the
move Blade you'll know what to expect. Demonic creatures fall to the ground when
killed, before rapidly burning away to ashes.
Early on in the game, it's easy
to feel that your weapons lack punch. The shotgun has a pleasing oomph, but is
pathetically ineffective outside a few metres away, while the machine gun and
pistol lack firepower. At least ammo is plentiful. Once you find the chain and
plasma guns, you'll feel a lot more dangerous, and the game ratchets up the
frequency and scale of the fire fights accordingly.
All the weapons in the game have a single style
of attack. No secondary firing modes here. This is a good thing, as it keeps
the focus firmly on the game play, not the tools. This is not to
say the weapons are boring though.
The plasma gun is a firm favourite, just because of the
spectacular light show it provides. Try firing one in a darkened hallway to see
what we mean.
