We've just finished looking at AOpen's i915Pa-PLF
motherboard which is built around the 915P chipset and Intel Pentium 4 Socket
775 processor. The only thing I can complain about is the lack of accessories.
AOpen does not include many cables or any brackets with the i915Pa-PLF... which
is somewhat disappointing. If you need more USB ports you'll either have to buy
yourself a USB hub or USB bracket since by default the i915Pa-PLF only allows
four connections, despite the 915P chipset supporting more.
Even though it's likely to be marketed towards 'average'
computer users, the AOpen i915Pa-PLF performed very well in our benchmark
suite. Sure it was not as fast as the 925X/XE motherboards, but the performance
differences, especially in games, are too small to notice for most users.
This motherboard was not a particularly good
overclocker, but adding active cooling to the Northbridge heatsink might help
things along a bit.
There aren't too many integrated features on the
i915Pa-PLF, and AOpen typically price its products competitively, so keep an eye
out for this board if it has caught your interest. If you're looking to upgrade
to Intel's Socket 775 Pentium 4, or PCI Express, this is certainly a competent
solution to opt for.
