Looks
familiar? Not surprising, as the MSI NX6600GT-VTD128SP is virtually identical to the MSI
NX6600GT-VTD128 AGP card we just saw. MSI has repackaged the card in a shiny new
box with the Riddick: Escape from Butcher's Bay game and some funky coloured
cables. They've also cranked the memory up to 1000MHz, offsetting the major
weakness of the other card. The core runs at 500MHz like the other 6600GT cards
in the roundup.
Like its
sister card, the MSI NX6600GT-VTD128SP AGP features full VIVO features,
something that few other cards in the roundup can offer. The AGP interface also
means no SLI and that extra power is required.
The
bundle is where things get interesting, as MSI has changed it to suit the
'Supreme Edition' branding and the bundled game Riddick: Escape from Butcher's
Bay. Included is a full breakout box in place of the VIVO cable included with
the other card. The cables and DVI-analog converter have been coloured a funky
bright yellow-green colour. In place of the three games formerly included, you
have just one, but it's a goodie. Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher's
Bay is one of the best movie tie-in games in history, and an excellent first
person shooter which really puts the capabilities of modern computers on show.
It's prettier than Doom 3, if you can believe it.
Overclocking: We were hoping for slightly better
results out of the MSI NX6600GT-VTD128SP given its boosted RAM speed. The final
usable speeds we achieved were an impressive 601MHz for the core and a slightly
disappointing 1075MHz memory. The core overclock was the second highest attained
in this roundup, while the memory ended up slightly slower than its sister card,
the NX6600GT-VTD128, which started with the memory clocked 100MHz slower. Seems
like MSI is using the same set of memory perhaps.
