By
combining DirectX8 support with completely new graphics, it continues to provide
good overall system benchmarks. 3DMark2001 SE has been created in cooperation
with the major 3D accelerator and processor manufacturers to provide a reliable
set of diagnostic tools. The suite demonstrates 3D gaming performance by using
real-world gaming technology to test a system's true performance abilities.
Tests include: DirectX8 Vertex Shaders, Pixel Shaders and Point Sprites, DOT3
and Environment Mapped Bump Mapping, support for Full Scene Anti-aliasing and
Texture Compression and two game tests using Ipion real-time physics. Higher
3DMark scores denote better performance.

It is common knowledge that the Athlon64 has a lot more
3D rendering power, and here we see the AMD-based systems totally dominate. At
stock speeds the Athlon64 X2 4800+ performs on par with the Athlon64 4000+ CPU.
This indicates that one core on the dual core chip is effectively sitting idle
while the program is running.
3DMark05 is
the latest version of the highly favoured 3DMark series. It is the first
benchmark to require a DirectX9.0 compliant hardware with support for Pixel
Shaders 2.0 or higher!

Running a dual core processor seems to help slightly on
the Intel side of things however there is no performance boost for AMD users. We
do see a slight increase in both Overall and CPU score when running the 32 bit
benchmark in a 64 bit OS however.
