If you're a technology geek it's hard not to get excited the first time you hear about 3D HDTV. It's one of those amazing Jetsons-esque technologies that seems like we'd never quite get to, along with hover cars and robot butlers. PCSTATS cuts through the marketing hype and tells you if the 3D Samsung UN55C7000 55-inch HDTV is worth it.

3D TV Remote Control
The remote control
bundled with the Samsung UN55C7000 television works from distances up to about 25
feet away and is compatible with all other Samsung Anynet+ displays, DVD players
and so on. It's nice that one remote can basically be used to control all your
home theatre devices, provided you're fully outfitted with Samsung hardware.
The remote itself
is made of a mixture of rubberized plastic and aluminum, and fits comfortably in
adult-sized hands. The buttons on the remote are actually flat with just a bit
of haptic feedback when pressed, but there are raised rubbery ridges that
separate them to let you know where your fingers are oriented, and the buttons
themselves light up when pressed.
The remote itself has the standard
channel-surfing, volume and source selection buttons you'd expect to find on a
TV remote, but there's also a series of buttons to control features specific to
Samsung's UN series of televisions, with special controls for 3D, MediaPlay,
Yahoo! widgets, Internet@TV functions and content access.
The remote uses a
four way directional pad to navigate through its various menus. This new design
is considerably easier to use than the scroll wheel/directional pad hybrid found
on previous Anynet+ remotes.
Anynet+ and AllShare
Anynet+ is a compatibility standard
that allows inter-operability between newer Samsung receivers, DVD and Blu-ray
players, home theatre systems and HDTVS, allowing them to be controlled by a
single remote. The nice thing about Anynet+ is that its functions are pretty
much transparent to the user, and don't require any configuration to work.
During PCSTATS' testing of the UN55C7000
we tested it with a Samsung 3D Blu-Ray player, which worked perfectly with the
UN55C7000's included remote. Anynet+ was able to switch between controlling the
Blu-Ray player and the HDTV seamlessly.
If you really want the full James Bond experience when it comes to
controlling your home theatre equipment, you can use an
All-share compatible Samsung cellphone or PDA to control the UN55C7000, bypassing
the remote entirely. It's definitely a neat concept, but since it only works
with Samsung-branded phones PCSTATS wasn't able to test it out during this
review.
How about the 3D glasses? Fit and comfort are important when
sitting back to watch a full length 3D movie, particularly if you wear glasses
already....
